Day 10.5: Planning - Filming Times

The filming times that I choose for my project will have to be a suitable time for all of the actors within my trailer. For ease of use and organisation I have chosen to schedule most of my filming times over the half term holiday in October/November, this will allow me to easily have access to who is needed and not have to worry about time schedules due to work or college.
      I will start filming on Monday of the holidays, 29th of October, On this day I will be filming at the behind section of Phoenix Park, I have chosen to film at this location first as it is where the majority of the trailer will be filmed at, this is because it has access to a tunnelled area, open field and a social area/shopping area. To film within the shopping area of Phoenix Park I will need to seek permission from the shop keepers and owners of Phoenix Park. The filming on Monday will consist of filming the kidnapping scene within the trailer, this will involve filming within the tunnelled section of Phoenix Park and the appropriate forms will need to be completed to ensure the safety of the actors within the trailer.
    On Tuesday of the holidays, 30th October, I will continue filming within Phoenix Park, I will not be filming within the tunnelled section of the park as I hope to have completely finished the appropriate filming within this time, if I have not due to weather issues or unforeseen events then I will continue/start filming within the tunnelled section on this day. If plans continue as hoped then I will be filming within the Fielded section on this day of filming, I have chosen to do this section next as the actors should be familiar with the area by this time and easily be able to understand where I request them to preform, I have also chosen this area next as it is easy to access and the appropriate forms will already be largely filled out as to completing them within the previous day.
    On Thursday of the holidays, 1st November, I will be filming within, my own Home or the Police Station, this will entirely depend upon whether I am given the permission to record within the police station, if not I will have to use props and equipment around the home to give the illusion that it is a Police Station, to aid with this I will film the outside of the police station as a Master Shot to help set the scene of the movie. No actors will be required in this shot so it can easily be recorded without the reliance on other actors within the film. I will need to fill out the appropriate form depending upon location that is needed, after completing these forms I will be able to safely and easily record in these settings.
   On Friday of the holidays, 2nd November, I will be filming within Longton Park, I have chosen this location as it is a more forested and secluded area and can be used for a lot of the scenes within the trailer. There are also sections within longton park that can be used for moments previously recorded before this date, I will re-record these moments as it will give me a wide variety and choice as to which setting I prefer for the movie trailer to help set the scene. Longton Park will also give me access  to darker areas than any of the previously mentioned area, this is also ideal for filming in the trailer as it can be used for the mysterious villain sections and adds to the element of mystery within the trailer. I will need to complete appropriate forms and risk assessments before filming within this area as it is open to the public and is dark and secluded at times.
    From these times that I have listed I have also allowed myself time over the holidays to review the recorded sections of the film, this will also allow me to devote any of the extra days to more time filming if it is required. I have done this as it is still the holidays and getting all of the actors in the same place outside of the holidays may be difficult, so it is easier to film within the holidays. 31st October, 3rd November & 4th November.

Day 10.4: Planning - Storyboards

Here is a storyboard that I have designed for the opening of the trailer.

Day 10.3: Planning - Location

For the locations within my film I will need to have, an area that could pass as a police chiefs office, an open fielded area which can be used for other sections of the trailer including the mysterious and masked villain, an area with dim lighting that has access to a telephone, a location where I can achieve a long shot on Stoke-on-Trent to establish the scene and underground/tunnelled area to be used in the kidnapping scene of the trailer.
       For the area that could pass as a police chiefs office I could use, my own home. I will need to gain permission from the other occupants of the home to gain permission to film here and I will need to fill in a risk assessment to outline the general risks of filming within my own home. I will also need a time where the two main actors are free together along with me so that all 3 of them can be in the scene at the same time as they will all be seen on the screen at the same time. I could also ask for permission from the local police station for permission to film the inside and/or outside of their building in longton to give the impression of the scene taking place within a police station, If I am only given permission to use the outside of the building I can use editing to cut seamlessly to also give the impression of that it is filmed within the police station.
      For the open fielded area I could use Longton Park, for permission to film within Longton Park I will need to contact the local council for permission to film in that area, I will also need to fill in a risk assessment to outline all the possible risks of filming within an open, secluded and forested area. I will also need to find a timescale and slot that is suitable with the opening times of the park and the times available to the two main actors. Another factor I will need to take into account is the weather, the weather may affect my recording times and open opportunities as I will need a range of weather, clear skies and possibly some light/medium rain.
     Another area I am considering using within my film trailer is the behind section of phoenix park, I have chosen this area as it has an open field, buildings and a tunnel which can all be used in the trailer that I am creating. I will need to gain permission from the local business if I choose to film the buildings in the area. I will also need to fill in a risk assessment which will outline the risks of filming within that area.

For the longshot of Stoke-On-Trent I will need to find a high-area where I can get a good view. I know of a few areas with this kind of shot potential, I will need to conduct more research into these areas to pick a certain one to use in the trailer.

Day 10.2: Planning - Actors/Actresses

For the main villain of the film trailer I will be using myself. I have chosen to use myself because the main villain of the film remains mysterious and unknown and is only shown briefly during the trailer of the film and is never seen full on. This is suitable for me as I will also be recording the trailer, this will enable me to direct and view the other actors more easily without being on camera. This will also enable me to record more easily as I will not need to use a stand as often if I am only recording myself in the trailer briefly. It also gives me the options to pan around with the camera easily and to create other effects more easily.

For one of the Main Actors of the film I will be using my good friend Mark Smith. Mark has agreed to being within the trailer of my movie and I believe that this role is suitable for him. This role will require him to make jokes and talk with the other main actor of the film. I believe he can achieve this easily and will easily fulfil the role required of him in the trailer. Mark has also preformed in front of crowds and completed a course in Preforming Arts & Drama, this gives me the confidence that Mark will be suitable for the role of Main Actor within the trailer I am creating.

For my other Main Actor I will be using my life-long friend, Mathew Quinn. Quinny has agreed to be within the trailer of my movie and I believe that this role is suitable for him. This role will require him to make scripted jokes and talk with the other main actor of the film. I believe he can achieve this easily and will easily fulfil the role required of him. Quinny also plays guitar in a band so has experience with preforming in front of others and should easily be able to adapt to working in front of a camera. Quinny is also a completely different type of person than Mark is, the other main actor, this enables me to continue with the convention of having two main actors who are different to each other but end up liking each other, which is suitable for this trailer I am creating.

My trailer will also contain a Damsel, this Damsel will be played by ---. --- has agreed to be within the trailer  of my movie and I believe that this movie is suitable for them. This role will not require a lot of practice or talking roles by the actor playing this role. I believe that this role is suitable for them because they have no experience with preforming in front of a camera or audience.

For my Dispatcher & Authority I will also be using myself for this role. I have chosen myself for this role as it will tie in with the story of the film trailer, the Police Chief is the villain, but this will remain unknown to the audience and actors within the film. The role of Police Chief will also be easy to film as it will mostly be done over phone conversations or within an office with a stationary camera allowing for ease of use in these scenes.

Day 10.1: Planning - Permission for Soundtrack

For the soundtrack I have chosen to try and get the permission for Battery by Metallica for this I will need to contact Metallica or their label, Elektra. I can do this through their official website;  "www.metallica.com". I am hoping I will be able to gain permission to use this soundtrack as it appeals largely to my target audience and to the results of the questionnaire that I had produced. I have contacted them through their official website and email requesting permission to use the soundtrack here is the following email I sent.

" Dear Metallica / Record Label,
I am a student currently studying A2 Media Studies, I am looking for permission to use the soundtrack for Battery in my movie trailer that I will be creating for College coursework. I will be earning no profits from the creation of this trailer and I will source and note the appropriate tags for the use of the soundtrack as appropriate. I have also included a link to my blog as proof of my usage of the soundtrack as all information about the movie trailer will be posted within here <url removed>.
    Thanks for your time ~ James Johnson "

Edit: I have received emails from Elektra refusing permission for the usage of this audio track in this project.

I have also chosen to contact another band/ record label to try and get permission for the soundtrack for my trailer, this band and song would be; Mastodon - Curl of the Burl, for this I will need to contact Mastodon or their Record Label, I can do this through their official website www.mastodonrocks.com/
or their label for the album " The Hunter ", Reprise / Roadrunner.  I am hoping I will be able to gain permission for the use of this soundtrack as it appeals largely to my target audience and to the results of the questionnaire that I had produced. I have contacted them directly through their official website and through the labels website to request permission for the use of the soundtrack.

"Dear Mastodon / Record Label,
I am a student currently studying A2 Media Studies, I am looking for permission to use the soundtrack for "Curl of the Burl" in my movie trailer that I will be creating for College coursework.

Edit: I have received an email from Reprise/Roadrunner which contains more information on how to contact them for permission, I will continue the pursuit in trying to gain this soundtrack for my trailer.

Failing to receive permission from these labels / bands I have gained permission from my friend Mathew Quinn who also has created music along this genre and will be appropriate for my movie trailer, I have also used Mathew's music within other projects I have created for college so I can confirm and source the quality and genre of music is appropriate and high quality. I will source and credit Mathew appropriately if I use his music.

Day 9.3: Audience Research: Costumes

I have chosen this as a costume idea because of the mask and formal attire. From my research and questionnaire results, I will be having a mysterious villain within the film, to allow for the villain to remain mysterious I will use a mask to conceal the identity of the villain.

I have also chosen this idea for a costume because, of the previous idea mentioned. With the target audience wanting a mysterious and unknown main villain a mask is an easy and interesting way to allow for the main villain to remain a mystery within the trailer of the film. I could also end the trailer with the villain removing the mask revealing who he is, but use a camera angle where it is shown towards the main actors, but not the audience.

I have chosen this costume as the highest rated costumes for the main actors of the trailer was a casual attire, I have chosen this as a possible costume for the main actors as it easily allows for the audience to distinguish them between the main villain of the film. This costume also continues along with the story of the main actors being undercover police officers, this can be done with the addition of a badge hidden within the jacket to still show that these actors are the heros.

I have chosen consider this costume for the extra's within the trailer, this costume could be used within a created police station setting to allow to continue with the flow and not detract from the trailer of the movie, the use of this costume enables the extra's to continue the flow of the story without having to explain their purpose.

Day 9.2: Audience Research; Summary ~ Identify Audience.

Based upon the results of my questionnaire I have decided to aim the trailer at the age range of 15-20 years old. This will allow me to use the results in the questionnaire to the best effect as the largest range of people I questioned fall into this category. The key factors of my target audience will be that they are Male, heterosexual, white, minor education and Middle Class. I have chosen these key factors as these are also the main target audiences of other action comedy movies, this allows me to relate to the movies I have researched and keep the content of the movie similar.
       The Social Grade values of my target audience will include;
o C2 - Skilled Manual Workers
o D  - Semi-Skilled and Unskilled Workers
o E  - Casual Labour, unemployed, state pensioners and Students
This allows me to include the Social Grade of all 15-20 year olds, allowing me to primarily aim my trailer at that age range.
       The Socio-Economic values of my target audience will include;
o Survivor - Those who want security and like routine.
o Explorer - For whom personal growth and influencing social change is important.
I have chosen these Socio-Economic values for my target audience because, socialising is important for teenagers and students, this allows them to fall into the Explorer roll. I have also chosen the Survivor role for my target audience because it is also what teenagers between 15-20 fall into, as they are usually poor and living with parents, therefor dont want to take a risk with their money.
      The Uses and Gratifications of my film trailer will include;
o Personal Relationships - Something to talk about.
o Escapism - From routine, from problems and emotional release.
I have chosen these Uses and Gratifications for my film trailer as with Escapism it will allow for the viewer of the trailer to relate towards the characters and to have emotions for them, this will require me to create main characters that are relatable and interesting for the viewer. I have also chosen Personal Relationship based upon the Socio-Economic Values of the trailer, with the choice of Explorer these two go hand in hand as an Interesting topic to talk about will affect social change for the viewer.

The general Demographic for my trailer is:
o Mainly students or first time in jobs
o Renting or living with parents
o Poor
o Music and Style is important
o Socialising is important.
