Day 9.1: Audience Research: Analysis
The target audience of my film trailer will be 15-20 Year olds I have chosen this as my target audience as based upon the results of my questionnaire this was the largest section of people that I had questioned, this will allow me to use the results from the questionnaire to maximum effect as the audience I had interviewed mainly will be my target audience. Another reason I have chosen this as my target audience age range is because I fall within this age range, this will allow me to relate to the topics within the film and view them how my target audience would also, allowing me to create a more appropriate trailer for this age range. My secondary audience for the film trailer will be 21-30 year olds, I have chosen this age as my chosen secondary audience because, parents who are accompanying their child to see the movie will fall within this bracket. If I can make the film trailer appeal to this audience it will increase the range of viewers of the trailer drastically and will appeal to a larger audience.
To appeal to my target audience I will use the results of my questionnaire within my film trailer. This will appeal to my target audience as my target audience was the main age that I had questioned. From this I have concluded that the most popular sub-genre of the film is comedy and action. For this reason I will try to incorporate these into the movie trailer allowing for the trailer to appeal to both audiences. using essences of romance, this will allow for the trailer to appeal to more of an audience and allow for it to be more diverse. I will also be using formal and casual costumes in the trailer, this will allow me to easily distinguish the heros and the villains within the trailer without having to include a back-story.
The results of the questionnaire show that the audience would prefer a Mysterious villain, I will include this within my movie trailer as it allows me to use different camera angles and lightening allowing for the villain to remain unknown and add an element of mystery into the movie trailer.
Based upon the results of the questionnaire, the viewers are divided between the gender of the main actors, from these results I could include one female and one male main actor, this would be going against conventions as usually the main actors in a police film are of the same gender.
A large portion of the viewers like the conventions of a crime movie, this would include, gunfire, mystery's and murder, for this reason I will include these conventions in the trailer to appease the audience and to allow for the context of the trailer to be easily recognised.
Day [9]: Audience Research; Mission Statement
The genre of the product I will be creating will be Crime/Comedy, I will be using this genre as this is the genre of what I have completed my research on, this will allow me to easily compare my work between the research I have conducted and to allow me to make sure that I am staying within the genre of Crime/Comedy. I have also conducted my questionnaire based upon creating a Crime film with an unknown sub-genre, from the response of the Questionnaire Comedy and Action was tied at top, this is another reason why I have chosen to do Crime/Comedy as it will appeal to a larger audience than other genre's.

I will also be setting the movie within the city, this is mainly because of ease of access when filming and also because it is the most appealing based upon questionnaire results. Unusually from the results of the questionnaire the audience want the trailer to be set in the Ghetto and the Country-Side, this goes against conventions so I may try and implement it into the trailer.

Day 8: Research into Technical Aspects; Film Theory
The typical narrative structure of a movie trailer would be to use open narrative, this is through the use of Cliffhangers and suspense. It will allow for the audience to be left with questions unanswered and give them a reason to want to watch the trailer. The opposite of this would be non-linear narrative, this includes answering all the questions and the story flowing seamlessly with everything answered for the user, this is generally bad for a film trailer as it doesn't leave a reason for the viewer to need to see the entire film. For my trailer I will be using a open narrative to allow for cliffhangers to be left and to create suspense for the viewers watching the trailer.
Todorovs Narrative Theory states that most movies follow this narrative structure;
The movie starts with a state of equilibrium, the equilibrium is then disrupted by some action, be it a villain or a nature disaster, there is then a recognition that there is a disruption in the equilibrium, followed by an attempt to restore the equilibrium, with a hero or main actor and the movie ends on a reinstatement of the equilibrium, this allows for a movie to flow seamlessly while stile having an enticing and open story. For my movie trailer I will be following Todorovs theory, except for the ending, for my trailer to remain open narrative I will not show the restoring of peace to allow for the viewer to question what will happen within the film and how the peace may or may not be restored.
Vladimir Propp has a theory known as Propps Morphology, this theory states that each role in a film follows a certain suit, this includes.
Hero; mainly white, male and strong.
Villain; Foreign (Depends upon current world news), Male and usually has some form of a disability or is deformed.
Damsel; Most often female, weak and attractive.
Helper; the helper is the side-kick of the hero, the helper is weaker than the hero of the film, but stronger than the villain.
Dispatcher; The dispatcher sends the hero on a quest or triggers the hero to be needed in the film.
Authority; The authority represents power, usually in the form of the police, FBI or a king/queen and the Authority is usually always in control.
Following this theory I will use some of the stereo types from Propps Theory, I will not be using a Foreign Villain as in the trailer the villain will remain a mystery and will never be fully revealed to the viewer in the trailer. I will also be using a child for the damsel of the film, this will stay with conventions mostly but will not follow all of the conventions of a damsel.

Roland Barthes developed a theory that every narrative is interwoven with four codes to drive one main interest within the story, these include:
Action Code; The action code is used to drive the narrative and to allow the viewer to recognise progress in the movie without the use of visuals, through the use of sirens, gunfire etc etc.
Enigma Code; The Enigma code is generally used in Conventional Trailers, it is used on master shots of objects to make the user believe that they are important to the film without having to describe them manually.
Culture Code; The culture code is real life references, for example, makes of cars and brands of drinks within James Bond Movies.
Semic Code; The semic code is signs and symbols that represent something else.
Following this theory I will be using Action Code within my trailer, this will allow me to progress the story of the trailer without having to completely focus upon it. I will also be using Enigma Code, I will use this to allow the trailer to add an element of mystery with objects being shown that are important to the story. Finally I will be using the Culture code to make real life references, I will do this through, brands of products.

Day 7: Research Into Technical Aspects; Audience Responces
Based upon the results of my questionnaire I have decided to aim the trailer at the age range of 15-20 years old. This will allow me to use the results in the questionnaire to the best effect as the largest range of people I questioned fall into this category. The largest gender of people I interviewed was Male, this is important to my results as I aim to aim the trailer towards that gender.
From the results of the questionnaire I have concluded that the most popular sub-genre of the film is comedy and action. For this reason I will try to incorporate these into the movie trailer allowing for the trailer to appeal to both audiences. Going against conventions and audience results I may include essences of romance, this will allow for the trailer to appeal to more of an audience and allow for it to be more diverse.
I will also be setting the movie within the city, this is mainly because of ease of access when filming and also because it is the most appealing based upon questionnaire results. Unusually the audience want the trailer to be set in the Ghetto and the Country-Side, this goes against conventions so I may try and implement it into the trailer.
Unusually the audience results state that they would like 1 main actor in the film, this goes against conventions as usually crime movies will be used as a duo so that comedy can occur between the two main actors. Going against the questionnaire results I will be using two main actors in the trailer.
In question 7, the questionnaire results are tied between Formal Attire and Casual Attire. In the movie trailer I will be using both of these costumes, this will allow me to easily distinguish the heros and the villains within the trailer without having to include a back-story.
The results of the questionnaire show that all of the users who ticked Action and Comedy both would prefer a focus upon those in the trailer with less of a focus upon crime, this would allow the trailer to appeal to the largest audience without taking away from other audiences.
The results of the questionnaire show a large amount of viewers would prefer to have classic rock as the theme music behind the movie, this could cause an issue because of Copyright. I will try to find a suitable audio track without copyright or try and ask for permission from the creators. I could also ask my colleagues to create an audio track, but this would no longer be "Classic" Rock.
From the results of question 13, the interviewee's of the questionnaire would prefer for a focus upon the villain and hero on the magazine cover, but it is closely followed by a focus upon a villain. The difficulty with this is that with a mysterious villain it will be hard to focus upon them on a movie cover, I may have to focus upon the two main actors which was the least voted between the three.
A large portion of the viewers like the conventions of a crime movie, this would include, gunfire, mystery's and murder, for this reason I will include these conventions in the trailer to appease the audience and to allow for the context of the trailer to be easily recognised.
Finally the results of the questionnaire show that the context of the movie and trailer should focus upon Robbery. Although this is a good idea and context for a crime movie it will be hard to create the illusion of a robbery with the funding and resources I have. For this reason I may have to change the context of the movie into Kidnapping or Murder.
From the results of the questionnaire I have concluded that the most popular sub-genre of the film is comedy and action. Day 6.1; Research Into Technical Aspects; Questionnaire Result Graphs
From the results of the questionnaire I have created this graph, this graph allows for the user to easily view which soundtrack the interviewee's of the questionnaire would prefer. The highest voted was Classic Rock with Metal following shortly after, from this I have decided I will try and find an un-copyrighted Classic rock song or ask for copyright permission for use within my trailer, failing this I will ask my colleagues to create a metal theme track for the trailer.
This Pie-Chart shows what the interviewee's of the questionnaire believe that the focus of the trailer should be. The results of the pie-chart show that the largest amount voted for was the Robbery, although this will be hard to imitate with my budget and resources, so I have decided to use one of the second highest voted for options, Kidnapping or Drug Dealing.
This graph shows the results of what the interviewee's believe the costumes of the main actors should be. The results of the graph show that the Formal Attire and Casual Attire have achieved the same amount of votes, from this I have concluded I will use both in the trailer, I will use them differently on the heroes and villain in the trailer to allow for the audience to easily distinguish between the two.
This bar chart shows the amount of interviewees who voted upon the sub-genre of the film and what they had chosen, with the highest being Comedy followed with Action, from this I have concluded I will include Comedy and Action within the trailer to stick with the conventions of crime films and allow for it to appeal to a wider and more diverse audience.
This graph shows the results of where the viewers believe that the movie should be set, with the setting of City winning by a Landslide, due to this result I will be filming the trailer within the city as it is easy to access and is the most voted for on the graph making it the most appealing to me and the viewer.
